Palm Beach Gardens resident and two-time major tournament winner Rory McIlroy announced he broke off his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki just a few days after sending out wedding invitations.
McIlroy was tweeting a different tune as he rang in the new year with his wedding proposal in Sydney, Australia, before Wozniacki’s appearance in the Australian Open. “Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it's going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!" he posted. They were expected to be married later this year in New York. As recently as May 18, McIlroy tweeted a photo of the two eating dinner at Nobu Monte Carlo as the couple was spending time in London.

Maria Sharapova rallied from a first-set stumble to earn her fourth chance at a long-elusive Sony Ericsson Open title. Aggressive throughout, Sharapova endured the relentless returns of Caroline Wozniacki 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 Thursday at Crandon Park Tennis Center.
