New Order 's main ingredient is simplicity, which can feel a bit grating at times as you ostensibly repeat the same actions over and over. After you've unlocked a fair bit of abilities and have seen most of the enemies it can feel like a grind at times - a feeling that is alleviated the more you enjoy FPS games in general. The tesla packs and iron soldiers are a neat concept, but the more you play it the less developer MachineGames does with the occasionally mundane reality.

You’ll travel to non-German cities that have been entirely ripped apart and decked out in Nazi art decco. The effect is stunning. And while character faces aren’t the best in the industry, they still look fantastic. There’s really nothing to complain about here, even though this is a cross-gen game. On next-gen systems (or at least on PS4) the game looks terrific. Machine Games isn't content to offer a more civilian-rooted view of a Nazi occupation — The New Order also takes a stab at Western racism that goes beyond "the Nazis were evil," drawing a direct line between the Third Reich and the United States' ugly history of slavery, Jim Crow and segregation.

Where I enjoyed the combat flexibility The New Order presented me elsewhere, its larger "event" battles were often retrograde to its momentum. I enjoyed a couple of them, and in one, I even felt smart. But these are mostly trial-and-error collections of death followed by another try, and were easily the primary source of frustration in the game. This is actually my second go-round with a preview build of New Order , so I’ll just be hitting the new points that either weren’t around or escaped attention in my last preview If you’re still wondering why you should give this game a glance, I recommend reading that one first (though I’m obviously biased to the author).

The New Order is also old-school at times, chiefly because it employs the classic multi-weapon system that's eschewed so often these days for a simplistic two-gun loadout. There's a weapon wheel that allows you to switch from everything to rocket launchers to silenced pistols to dual assault rifles, and if you want you can use the weapon switch button to quickly swap between two of your favorites - opting for the best of both worlds. Hi-octane action and thrilling adventure weaved together into a tightly paced, super immersive game narrative featuring memorable characters. You’ll be able to see if either grabs your interest when the game releases for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC on May 20, 2014.
