Tommy Ramone , a co-founder of the seminal punk band the Ramones and the last surviving member of the original group, has died, a business associate said Saturday (July 12). We are saddened to announce the passing of Ramones founding drummer Tommy (Erdelyi) Ramone,” the band said on its Twitter feed. Following a tragic period from 2001 to 2004 where Joey, Dee Dee and Johnny Ramone all died within a few years of each other, Tommy had remained the only living founding member of The Ramones until yesterday (July 11). The drummer died after a battle with bile duct cancer. Ramone, born Erdelyi Tamas of Hungary, was a drummer and producer for the group. Ramone, whose real name was Thomas Erdelyi, was replaced in the band by drummer Marky Ramone.
Ramone is survived by his longtime partner Claudia Tienan and an older brother. A private funeral service is planned. The four-member Ramones came out of Queens with limited musical skills, but by 1976, their staccato riffs and full-frontal garage rock assaults began to make their mark on British punk musicians. The band has been acknowledged by many as the inventors of punk rock. Among the Ramones best-known songs were "I Wanna Be Sedated," "Teenage Lobotomy," "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker," "Blitzkrieg Bop" and "Beat on The Brat." The everyday heroes the Ramones sang about had dumped surfboards and disco gyrations for lives as pogo-ing punk rockers in the urban grit of places like Berlin and New York. He died after being in hospice care for cancer treatment.
Tommy Ramone, a drummer, co-founded the Ramones in 1974 in New York along with singer Joey Ramone, bassist DeeDee Ramone and guitarist Johnny Ramone. All four band members had different last names, but took the common name Ramone. The band influenced a generation of rockers, and their hit songs "I wanna be sedated" and "Blitzkrieg Bop," among others, earned them an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Johnny Ramone, whose birth name was John Cummings, died in 2004 of prostate cancer. Joey Ramone, whose real name is Jeff Hyman, died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer. Dee Dee Ramone, whose real name is Douglas Colvin, died from a drug overdose in 2002. Tommy Ramone was born Erdelyi Tamas in Budapest, Hungary.
