Kaiser Chief's Ricky Wilson was determined to get the festival off to an energetic start It especially had to redeem itself after the whole Adele 'speech-gate' incident in 2012 followed by what can only be described the crappiest performance by Blur. There have been mixed reactions to headline act Metallica at the Glastonbury Festival, as Lizo Mzimba reports
There was a ridiculous amount of anticipation surrounding the release of The Vaccines’ debut album in March, which can actually often have an adverse effect on bands as listeners become sceptical to the hype. Indeed the name of the album What Did You Expect from the Vaccines? suggests they were savvy to this potential backlash. However, with exceptional songs such as If You Wanna, the Strokes-esque A Lack Of Understanding and, my favourite, Family Friend, The Vaccines can certainly carry the hype that they have been burdened with by the critics. Live, they should put on one of the most sweaty and energetic performances of the weekend.
It's a stroke of serendipity that Lizzy and Max are even making music together. They may giggle uncontrollably and complete each other's thoughts, but these Vassar alums hardly knew each other during college. Lizzy was a media-studies major, releasing records under her burgeoning imprint Neon Gold. (She's gone on to release records by artists such as Passion Pit and Ellie Goulding.) Max was an urban-studies major with a concentration in modern dance, and started composing music for his choreographies. "There was an element of throwing caution to the wind. Send someone an email, hope for the best," explains Max.
Beyonce's high octane charismatic performance saw number one hits "If I Were A Boy" and "Crazy In Love" delight, the sing along continued as "Why Don't You Love Me" and "Single Ladies" were lapped up by the crowd. The performance of "1+1" in accompaniment to the piano was outstanding and the crowd sing along to "Irreplaceable" was easily the loudest of the weekend. With a teasing intro of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" morphing into "Halo" the finale was reached and only the harshest of critics would have considered the headline set as anything but a success.
I think there’s a lot to be said about hype in this day and age. With all the technology we have access to, the amount of information that we receive and process on a daily basis is much higher and our reactions to things are more instant and our opinions made on a whim because you can send something around the world and make it viral in less than 24 hours. But this isn’t about hype, that is exactly why it was released without any prior media coverage or speculation. It’s about a woman, expressing all the parts of herself through music and film, art forms which have divided opinion for many years and I don’t see that changing any time soon.
