Collectors Music Reviews
I’ve been to Glastonbury for the last 4 years and it just gets better every time. This year, the 40 th anniversary of the festival’s birth in the 1000 acres Somerset fields making up Michael Eavis’ legendary farm, was no exception. Who would have thought that something which began as “Pilton Pot Festival” which cost £1 entry, with free milk from the farm itself, could have become the amazing and renowned event which over 177,000 people attended this year?
By my count Sheeran shared five new songs this week. Despite being inspired by extremely painful real-life circumstances, “Don’t” (allegedly about Ellie Goulding cheating on him) is like Sheeran’s dated dance-pop experiment “Sing” but worse, and “Love Afire” (about Sheeran’s grandfather dying) is one of the blandest ballads I’ve heard in ages. But “Bloodstream” and “Thinking Out Loud” and “The Man” are three of the most listenable songs he’s ever done. The first is a moody folk-rock excursion that sounds a bit like a less grating Damien Rice. The second is a James Taylor-via-John Mayer roots-pop ditty that I quite like. Congrats for cracking me, Sheeran! NEWS IN BRIEF.
She recorded nearly 80 songs and says she chose the most effortless ones working with her favourite people in the industry. She describes ‘Drunk In Love’ as the “most organic video” she’s ever done as she is embracing mistakes and including them in the video. When filming ‘Flawless’, they used a handheld camera and low-lighting creating a “run’n’gun” style on the whole. They sought to capture instant and instinctive moments to create art. It is refreshing to see such spontaneity and freedom from an artist who usually plans meticulously. She says ‘Partition’ was a fantasy. The beat inspired her to revert to the earlier, flirtier days of her relationship.
After a failed attempt to find the venue that Kill It Kid were playing, I went to Leeds Met to see Esben and the Witch. They are a band who I have loved ever since hearing the haunting wails of Rachael Davies voice on ‘Marching Song’. Her voice on record blew me away but it in no way justifies her live abilities. They were phenomenal, there live sound and the atmosphere they create gives me goose bumps. They are about to embark on a UK tour supporting The Big Pink and also have a few summer festivals planned, if you can catch them live, really do, incredible!
Back at the Ballroom, Dan Deacon gave a unique performance and had the venue form a giant dance circle for a small competition that eventually turned into a massive dance party while he twiddled away on his custom gear, singing into the mic and creating music as he went. He even integrated a story into his set which was something to see. Having Dan Deacon play at Buku proved that this fest intends on delivering an experience like no other, without being absolutely massive. It’s all about the uniqueness of it all.
