HBO Films has released the full trailer for Ryan Murphy's "The Normal Heart," premiering on HBO Sunday, May 25 at 9 p.m. ET. Starring Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, Taylor Kitsch, Jim Parsons and Julia Roberts, the film was written by Larry Kramer, who adapted his groundbreaking Tony Award-winning play of the same name.
Larry Kramer’s 1985 play The Normal Heart is a polemic, an angry cry from the writer and AIDS activist who saw the nascent epidemic being ignored and/or marginalized by the government, the media, the medical establishment and even fellow members of the gay community in the early 1980s. It’s more political statement than drama, a time capsule of a certain kind of political action that has changed and developed greatly over the past few decades. As such, turning it into a movie in 2014 represents a difficult balancing act, one that Kramer (who wrote the screenplay for HBO’s movie version) and director Ryan Murphy can’t quite pull off.
It's hard for those of us a generation removed from this story to remember that there was a time when AIDS wasn't AIDS. It makes The Normal Heart take on the feeling of a horror movie—an entire population is being stalked by an unknown assailant, insidious, unknowable, unnamed. Those of us too young to bear witness to the horrors of these years should count ourselves lucky, but we should do more than that. If The Normal Heart reminds us of anything, it's to never, never stop shouting into the wind. Make them hear you.”
Looking at The Normal Heart today, I see it as a play about the AIDS epidemic, but am struck by how it is also about the journey of homosexuals in America,” said Nick Bowling. “Larry Kramer brutally exposes both America’s fear of gays and the gay community’s inability to pull itself together. It took the catastrophe of the AIDS epidemic to unite that community behind a purpose and make the world begin to deal with us as normal human beings. In some horrible way, AIDS made way for the progress of the modern LGBTQ community.”
