Tips For Donating A Car To Charity
At Charity Navigator, our primary purpose is helping America's donors make informed giving decisions when they part with their hard-earned dollars by writing a check to charity. In the past few years, however, more and more donors are attempting to help themselves, and help others, by donating their used automobiles to charity. This has become a massive business.
It's easy and fast. You may donate either online or by phone, 855-WHYY-CAR (855-9499-227). You provide the vehicle information (including the Vehicle Identification Number /VIN), personal contact information and title status. Then, you mail in the title. In Pennsylvania, a title is required and it must be signed and notarized. As soon as the WHYY Vehicle Donation Program receives the title, a tow service will call to arrange a convenient time and location to pick up the vehicle. You do not need to be present when your car is picked up.
When you go out you may see on hoardings or while you watch the TV you may find so many organizations saying that they would make your way to date your vehicle, free from hassles. Don’t get carried away by such advertisements as such organizations keep more than 50 % of the value of the vehicle for themselves and the charity would not get what you actually wanted to give. Better contact the charities yourself and inquire whether they would undertake vehicle donations.
Be wary of offers that seem too good to be true. Some car donation programs offer vacation trips and large gift certificates in exchange for the donation of a car. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Is it realistic to expect that you will be given a vacation trip or a $1000 gift certificate in exchange for your klunker? Be aware that if you receive something in exchange for your contribution, you may not be entitled to a tax deduction.
