‘Game Of Thrones’ Recap
Jon Snow is the bastard son of Eddard Stark Although Eddard raised Jon next to his own children, he is loathed by his stepmother, Catelyn Stark An ongoing mystery for Jon Snow is the identity of his mother.
Jon Snow — He ultimately proved his mettle, as we all knew he must, with the help of Longclaw and a blacksmith’s hammer. But his earlier stint atop the Wall was spent mostly staring pensively into the distance. The giants were something to behold, for sure, but you can’t just watch them methodically chain their mammoth to the gate like they’re AAA giving you a tow. You’ve got to torch the giants! By the time he figured this out and rolled out the oil barrels — to great effect, by the way — the outer door was done for, and Grenn and company were forced to sacrifice themselves to a charging giant to hold the gate.
But let’s go back to poor Jon and Ygritte for a moment. Leaving aside the fact that Jon would have been killed in five seconds if he’d taken the time to cradle his dead girlfriend like that during a real battle, that was quite a touching moment they shared. Sure, I could have done without the call back to her irritating “You know nothing, Jon Snow” refrain, but the thing about the cave was very sweet. All in all, I think Rose Leslie did a great job with a not especially well-rounded role, and I’m sorry to see her go.
On a purely technical level, this is maybe the series' finest achievement yet. On a storytelling level, however, it mostly left me cold. A large part of this stems from the fact that Jon Snow has always been the most boring of the series' major characters, on both page and screen. That’s the sort of subjective thing where if you’re a huge Jon Snow fan, you’ll likely disagree. But even the biggest Jon and Ygritte 'shippers, say, would be hard-pressed to find the moment when the latter dies of an arrow through the heart to be as powerful as it might have been.
