Eli Wallach, Veteran Character Actor, Dies At 98

Eli Wallach, the raspy-voiced character actor who starred in dozens of movies and Broadway plays over a remarkable and enduring career and earned film immortality as a conniving, quick-on-the-draw bandit in the classic Western "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," has died. He was 98.

Of course, Chaplin had frequently tried to empathize with the common man seeking to live the American Dream. Chaplin’s obsession is certainly understandable – like that other great British writer, Charles Dickens, Chaplin had come from a background of poverty. He was never even formally educated. When fame and success was thrust upon him, he barely knew what to do. It was on screen that Chaplin was always the most comfortable. The Tramp was not just a character – it was Chaplin, trying to come to terms with his background.

Kirk Douglas tried repeatedly to get this Ken Kesey novel made into a film, but by the 1970's had lost interest and past the project on to his son Michael. It was a brave decision from Michael to enlist relatively unknown Eastern European Milos Foreman as the director of the project (although reportedly Kirk's first choice), but Milos' style, really suits the material. Jack Nicholson's magnetism in the role earned him his first Best Actor Oscar, with Louise Fletcher as the sinister Nurse Ratchet is the perfect foil for him. It's support cast comprises of up and coming actors such as Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd, Vincent Schiavelli and Brad Dourif, who have since become stars in their own right.

When we did “All the King’s Men,” I had the third part. He gave a big shot in that. There was Neville Brand who played the lead, and Maureen Stapleton, and I had the third role. But in the credits, Bill Prince got third billing and I had fourth or or fifth or something. So he got a very nice review for me doing my part! He got my review. They thought, well, he got the third credit, he must have been the actor that played that part. That was kind of heartbreaking.
