Mixed Emotions Over Narendra Modi's Probable Win In India
India's next prime minister will be the pro-business Narendra Modi, who led the Bhartiya Janata Party (India People's Party, or BJP) to an unprecedented absolute majority, with over 280 seats projected in India's 543-member Lok Sabha (House of the People, the lower house of parliament). The stock market went giddy over the Modi victory.
The world watches as 800 million eligible voters take to the polls in India, making the 2014 Lok Sabha elections the single biggest electoral exercise in history. Few people predicted India would remain a democracy post-independence because of its heterogeneous society. It is a country where people practice every major religion in the world and speak more than a hundred different languages. From an economic standpoint, the divide between rich and poor is so stark that there is a slum in the vicinity of a billion -dollar residential building in Mumbai.
The US State Department again reasserted that nothing has changed for Modi, “there has been no change to our visa policy” and “he is welcome to apply for a visa and await a review like any other applicants.” For Modi’s supporters in India, these statements are interpreted as insulting. It is important for Modi’s opponents and supporters to understand that these statements do not necessarily reflect on Modi. All governments require an individual to apply for a visa in order to visit that country. But the United States will need to revisit his travel ban should he actually become India’s next prime minister.
The coming months promise something special for Narendra Modi. A whole new chapter of accomplishments and aspirations lies ahead of him but he needs to be cautious about the choices he makes. He may face severe opposition and criticism but it's imperative for him to not let it get to him and stay focused. He needs to pay more attention to his health in the latter half of the year. His spirit and will power will play an important role in helping him get through all hiccups 2013 will make him experience. His chances of being the next PM are high and we will witness widespread support for him.
Mr. Modi and the BJP have won the support of the electorate of India primarily based on his and his party’s platform of Hindu nationalism and, most prominently, economic development – a platform greatly enhanced by Mr. Modi’s stellar record of development in his home state of Gujarat, whose above average growth and development he has presided over as the state’s Chief Minister since 2001. His free market views and humble origin – Mr. Modi had been the quintessential “chai wallah” or ‘tea boy’ at a train station as a boy – contributed to his characterization as the “Ronald Reagan of India” recently by The Daily Caller
