Hello Race Fans! – 2014 Preakness Cheat Sheet
The Preakness Stakes was first inaugurated in 1873 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The race actually predates the Kentucky Derby by two years and is held on the 3rd Saturday in May every year. It is the shortest of the Triple Crown races and usually attracts the winner of the Kentucky Derby, many of the other horses that ran in the Derby, as well as other horses that didn’t run. If a horse wins both the Kentucky Derby an the Preakness, speculation and excitement instantly swirl around the horse and jockey about whether or not the Triple Crown will be won at Belmont.
Kid Cruz’s dam is the unraced Tale of the Cat mare Layreebelle, whose AWD of 8.33 furlongs puts her second among the mares with Preakness runners in 2014. She has produced two winners from as many foals to race – the other is Grade 2 winner Spellbound, who has won at a mile and a mile and a sixteenth and is entered in the 1 1/16-mile Grade 3 Adoration Stakes at Santa Anita. Kid Cruz himself has won stakes at 1 1/8 miles and 1 1/16 miles, and won his maiden going a mile.
Ria Antonia (30-1) – In a bid to avoid racing against Oaks winner Untapable next out, the 6th place Kentucky Oaks finisher will face males for the first time. Before you dismiss her outright, she pulled a huge upset in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies when she ran a game 2nd by a nose and won via disqualification of She’s a Tiger With the likes of Bayern , General a Rod , Pablo Del Monte and Social Inclusion vying for the early lead, she could see the same kind of pace scenario that produced her stellar BC performance.
California Chrome got a great break, coming out of the gate clean and moving toward the lead. Pablo Del Monte took the early lead with California Chrome running third into the far turn. California Chrome made a move at the top of the stretch with Social Inclusion running strong in second place. California Chrome pulled into the lead, and while Ride on Curlin mounted a strong effort down the stretch, it wasn't enough, and California Chrome held on for the win.
