Angelou was little known outside the theatrical community until "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," which might not have happened if writer James Baldwin hadn't persuaded Angelou, still grieving over King's death, to attend a party at the home of Jules Feiffer , a cartoonist and writer. Feiffer was so taken by Angelou that he mentioned her to Random House editor Bob Loomis , who persuaded her to write a book by daring her into it, saying that it was "nearly impossible to write autobiography as literature."
The Hollywood Reporter has suggested a number of names that their staff thinks might be good choices for director of the new pics. While some of them— J.J. Abrams and Jon Favreau —are unsurprising, one suggestion raised at least a couple of eyebrows (mine). That would be Family Guy ’s Seth McFarlane Rated R for its language, "Ted" allows MacFarlane to push beyond the limits of what he can do on network television while maintaining a twisted sweetness to the story. He likes to think of it as a family comedy for families whose parents don't mind swearing around their kids. A fan of "talking creatures that have no business talking," such as the cows in Gary Larson's "Far Side" comics, MacFarlane originally conceived of "Ted" as an animated TV series.
Does 'A Million Ways to Die in the West' certify Mr. MacFarlane as a bona fide movie star," asks The New York Times' Stephen Holden. "It's too soon to tell. He demonstrates enough confidence to emerge relatively unscathed from the movie, which he produced, directed and wrote (with Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild), but he is far from imperial. At the same time, you wonder if someone else (maybe Jim Carrey) could have given Albert a stronger personality."
