Maria Sharapova Wins Her 2nd French Open Title, Beats Simona Halep In 3 Sets In
One impressive run does not a season make, as the WTA rankings reward a balance between consistent performances and notable success. Halep will pass Sorana Cirstea in the rankings on Monday, and will be the Romanian No. 1 for the first time in her career. With a legitimate chance to add to her title haul this weekend in Budapest and going forward, and with two-thirds of the 2013 season in the rearview mirror, Halep’s steady rise makes her one of the leading contenders for the WTA’s Most Improved Player of the Year award.
The final should be a fitting conclusion to what has been a great Roland Garros for the women. There have been some excellent matches and it is refreshing to have seen some competitive matches later on in the tournament. Sharapova has won all three previous matches against Halep including that final in Madrid, which she won, 1-6 6-2 6-3. When Sharapova was struggling for rhythm, Halep sweeped up beautifully in the first set; however when Sharapova was on the money, Halep really didn’t have any answers. This will be Halep’s first Grand Slam final.
In January, she reached the quarterfinals in the 2011 ASB Classic defeating Ayumi Morita and Elena Vesnina , but losing to the second seed, Yanina Wickmayer She would go then to the 2011 Moorilla Hobart International but she would lose in the third qualifying round, in a decisive set against Magdaléna Rybáriková At the 2011 Australian Open , Halep qualified for the first time in her career in the third round of a tennis Grand Slam on seniors, beating the 24th seed Alisa Kleybanova before losing in straight sets to the 12th seed Agnieszka Radwańska and not progressing to the fourth round.
