How I Met Michael Jackson
Inspired in part by her childhood memories of watching music videos like Michael Jackson's "Thriller" as a shared experience with her family, "Beyoncé" was released Friday morning as a simultaneous audio and visual album, with full-length videos for each of the 13 tracks (plus a bonus video-only clip for "Grown Woman," a song she premiered in a Pepsi commercial earlier this year.)
On August 24, multiple news outlets quoted anonymous sources as stating that the Los Angeles coroner had decided to treat Jackson's death as a homicide; this was later confirmed by the coroner on August 28. 163 164 At the time of death, Jackson had been administered propofol , lorazepam and midazolam 165 Law enforcement officials are currently conducting a manslaughter investigation of his personal physician, Conrad Murray. 166 Jackson was buried on September 3, 2009 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California 167 Artistry edit Influences edit
Even though he never fully recovered from pyro gone awry on a Pepsi commercial set, Michael Jackson made a post-mortem appearance last night at the Denver venue that bears the beverage’s name No, I’m not high. And I’m not referring to the small army of impersonators featured in Cirque du Soleil’s authorized tribute I’m talking about the moment when a forty foot hologram of Jackson was projected into an enormous column of fabric. The way the image dematerialized and rematerialized, the way the edges of the apparition softened and disintegrated, I honestly felt for an instant I was witnessing Jackson’s actual ghost. Somehow, I doubt I was alone.
On the other side of the coin I think it is good that there was a lot criticism surrounding the hype over Michael Jackson’s death. The same couldn’t be said about Princess Diana’s death. Not long before her death the satire came thick on the “People’s Princess” across the media. This included criticism surrounding Diana’s publicity-seeking filmed attendance of open heart surgery. No sooner had she died then no-one dared speak in any way that was critical of her. For more on this and the subject of sentimentality, which I will no doubt return to in future articles, please read BBC journalist and aggressive interviewer David Humphrys’ book, “Devil’s Advocate”.
The audience were whooped up in anticipation as they awaited the singer’s arrival, listening to that most dramatic of classical anthems, Carmina Burana’s “ Fortuna”. It happened in a flash as Jackson leaped out of nowhere and then stood perfectly like a statue for what seemed like an eternity, propelling the audience into an ever-increasing state of euphoria. My mother, a born and bred circus woman, always talks about the “Wow Factor” in acts. This the defining moment in a performance that sends a stream of uncontrollable and chaotic energy through an audience. Jackson’s wow factor is perhaps almost incomparable in at least the second half of 20th century.
