India’s Narendra Modi Congratulated On His Win By White House, U.S. Senate
But Modi was a controversial candidate because of riots that took place between Hindus and Muslims in Gujarat in 2002. Modi was the chief minister of the state at the time, and some have accused him of initiating the violence.
Contrary to general assumptions, Manmohan Singh’s weakness is actually his strength and his weakness his strength. As LK Advani found out in 2009 and even later in parliament, if you attack Singh’s meekness, you risk public opprobrium and Singh can easily turn the tables. But if you pity him, you gain. The meek always inherit the public’s sympathies. Modi was happy to defend Singh when Rahul Gandhi insulted him by rubbishing the ordinance to help convicted criminals as “nonsense”. Modi defended Singh. He attacks Sonia and Rahul more in order to expose the weakness of their government.
Even before the NDA had conclusively reached a majority in parliament, investors took the took India’s SENSEX Index to an all-time high, bringing the Indian Rupee to a 10-month high against the U.S. dollar as well. Modi and the BJP are widely perceived to be able to succeed economically where the Indian National Congress failed. Although the BJP will not immediately reverse several of the Congress’ populist schemes that have driven the Indian government into fiscal unease, it is expected to address broader economic issues such as inflation and development.
The BJP’s massive margin of victory might yield a new type of Indian politics, effectively reducing parliamentary barriers to passing new legislation. With 274 seats, the new prime minister and his party will be able to maneuver whatever measures they see fit through parliament without the hassle of having to deal with often-fickle coalition partners or a recalcitrant opposition. It remains to be seen how the BJP will manage its coalition partners within the NDA. The smaller parties within the NDA, including the Shiv Sena and the Telugu Desam Party, might find their influence wane within the coalition given the BJP’s majority.
The controversial Indian official Narendra Modi spoke to a hotel owners convention by satellite Thursday morning and publicly invited Gov. Jeb Bush to visit his home state. Modi had originally planned to attend the conference of the Asian-American Hotel Owners Association, but was stripped of his travel visa after a coalition of Muslim and human rights groups denounced him as complicit in the 2002 massacre of some 2,000 Muslims in India's Gujarat province. The State Department canceled Modi's visa under a provision that bars government officials from traveling to the United States if they are deemed responsible for violating religious freedom.
