Barbara Walters’ One Regret
It was a fitting sendoff for the woman who paved the way for all women in news. The list - which is uber long - includes Jane Pauley, Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric, Connie Chung, Robin Roberts, Maria Shriver, Kathie Lee Gifford. you get the idea.
Barbara Walters plans to make her final appearance on "The View" on May 16, part of a daylong retirement celebration that will include ABC News naming its New York headquarters after her. Barbara Walters is a broadcast journalist and author, best known for hosting television shows Today, The View, 20/20 and as co-anchor of the ABC Evening News and correspondent on ABC World News. Barbara Walters, the first woman to co-anchor a network evening newscast, will retire in 2014 after one more year on ABC News and her talk show, “The View.”
Students were enthusiastic about the event for a variety of reasons. Lauren Hudson '12 and her friend Zoe Frederick '12 both mentioned the example Walters' life-long career provides to women. Among her many achievements, Walters was the first female co-host of the Today Show and the first female co-anchor of the ABC Nightly News "I'm proud to have her as an alumna of the school. It sets a certain standard," said Hudson. Frederick explained that her grandmother attended Sarah Lawrence and had given her a book of essays by alumnae reminiscing about their time on campus. One of the essays was by Barbara Walters.
Still, you write a book, you want it to succeed. So Walters taped a show with Oprah, she who sells books to women. Oprah and Barbara — the dish over that clothesline would starch a collar. And, broadcast on publication day, move a book or three. At her age, men may not be flinging themselves off balconies for Walters. It’s just as well; she’s pretty directly announced that her lovers have no expectation of privacy. Every moment is on the record. For Barbara Walters, what happens in Vegas is grist for Knopf.
