The production of photovoltaic cells, which are used to change sunlight directly into electricity, causes far less pollution than fossil fuel-burning power plants. While manufacturing the cells does require harmful metals such as lead and mercury and also produces some greenhouse gases, the toxic emissions are up to 300 times lower than those created by coal power plants, according to scientists with the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York.
An annual competition sponsored by the U. S. Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Solar Decathlon brings teams of college and university students from around the world to compete in designing, building, and operating a home powered completely by solar energy. The competition is held on the National Mall in Washington, D. C., where participants transport their solar houses to form a solar village. The winner is awarded with $100,000.
