In With Tom Cruise's Edge Of Tomorrow

In With Tom Cruise's Edge Of Tomorrow

Warner Bros. Pictures released their new Tom Cruise branded, Sci-Fi/thriller flick, “Edge Of Tomorrow” into theaters this weekend, and the reviews from the top critics, are all in. It turns out that most of them liked it with an overall 71 score out of a possible 100 across 43 reviews at the metacritic.com site.

OK, so we’re being a bit melodramatic. You’ll be relieved to hear that this is the set up for the whole movie and not a finale reveal. With The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman bringing the spectacle, the movie stars Tom Cruise as Major William Cage, a military officer of the future who, unskilled in combat, finds himself thrown into a time loop and dying in the line of duty repeatedly. Emily Blunt plays total badass and Special Forces “warrior” Rita Vrataski who must team up with Cage in a war-torn near future in an attempt to defeat an extra-terrestrial enemy. Edge of Tomorrow is released in cinemas May 30.

Somewhere some way somebody’s going to review “Edge of Tomorrow” without mentioning “Groundhog Day,” but as you just heard, it ain’t gonna be me. “Edge of Tomorrow” is a badass, sci-fi take on “Groundhog Day,” with Tom Cruise in the Bill Murray role as a self-centered and not particularly noble loner who finds himself starring in a continual loop in which he is condemned to repeat the same day over and over — which eventually leads to some life-changing revelations.

Cruise and Cage are aligned in that way at the start. But I also see the casting as having a metaphorical significance for Cruise’s career of late. He is considered to be one of if not the biggest movie star in the world, but you wouldn’t think it by looking at how his movies have opened in the U.S. — ever, really, though especially in the past decade. Some of them wind up performing relatively well in the long run, and they do pretty decent comparatively overseas, but his last two movies didn’t even gross enough combined in America to pay off Edge of Tomorrow ‘s budget. In a way, he might as well be starting fresh with this movie, like he’s just any movie actor starting out on the same level as everyone else.
