Mario Kart 8 Character Stats Detailed
I’ve said it before that Mario Kart 8 is easily my most anticipated game next month – and that’s a month that sees Watch Dogs finally being released. There’s a new bundle coming to coincide with the game to make amends.
The release of the Mario Kart 8 Premium Pack – Special Edition represents an ideal offering for first-time Wii U owners, with a black Wii U Premium console with 32GB of storage packaged alongside a black Wii U GamePad controller, Sensor Bar, and the all-important Mario Kart 8 game disc. With Mario Kart 8 set to feature 16 remixed classic courses, as well as 16 courses that are brand new to the series, both newcomers and veteran drivers alike will face fresh karting challenges with the added twist of a new antigravity feature allowing Mario and company to race upside down or up vertical surfaces.
Since the Wii U is Nintendo's first HD game system, Mario Kart 8 is Nintendo's first HD Mario Kart game, and it looks excellent. Whether you play it on your HDTV or on the less-than-HD Wii U Gamepad, it's eye-catching, colorful, and striking. The Wii U can push better textures and lighting effects than the Wii , making some of the courses quite beautiful. It's still cartoonish, but the look is fantastic for this style of game. Nintendo has combined its classic gameplay (finely tuned as ever) with beautiful visuals, and the result is something that I love playing — and so will most people.
Also disappointing is the difficulty level of single-player. If you’ve played Mario Kart before (and with seven predecessors to Mario Kart 8, chances are you have), the 50cc and 100cc difficulty tiers will pose such little challenge that you’ll rarely see another kart after the first corner. But even on the more challenging 150cc (and unlockable 150cc Mirror Mode), if you get out ahead of the pack by the end of lap 1, you’re practically guaranteed a win. Online and off, no weapon will close a big gap, especially when even the Blue Shell is now vulnerable.
Mario Kart 8 is a fantastic example of Nintendo moving forward while mostly keeping the ideas that made its franchise beloved. Its online features are expanded, and the video upload option is a nice touch that adds icing to the decades-old layer cake that is Mario Kart. The revamped Battle Mode isn't very entertaining, but the core race gameplay, new and remixed track designs, and high-definition graphics make it a must-buy for any Wii U owner. It's also a system seller for any Nintendo fan who loved Mario Kart 7 or Mario Kart Wii but hasn't upgraded to Wii U yet.
