KAPALUA, Hawaii — Rory McIlroy is claiming his first win of the new year — his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
Wozniacki suffered early exits in her next two tournaments, losing to Marion Bartoli in the second round in Stuttgart , and to Victoria Azarenka in the third round in Rome She reached the final of the inaugural Premier Mandatory Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open , where she lost to world no. 1 Dinara Safina This was Wozniacki's only match against a reigning no. 1 before she herself became no. 1 in October 2010. Seeded 10th at the French Open , Wozniacki lost to Sorana Cîrstea in the third round. They partnered in doubles, but lost in the first round.
At least McIlroy will have something to cheer him up. The Manchester United fan will play in the pro-am alongside three former stars from the club, Teddy Sheringham, Peter Schmeichel and Phil Neville. "I've been a Manchester United fan my whole life, and getting to play with three Manchester United legends is going to be a nice afternoon," McIlroy said. "I remember watching the Champions League final in '99 when United beat (Bayern) Munich in Barcelona, and it was a very memorable night. All those three guys were involved."
McIlroy signed a mega-deal with Nike to kick off 2013 , which Cindy Davis, Nike Golf President, called “one of the most important moments in the history” of the company. He was under the spotlight more than ever, and his 2013 was filled with a controversial withdrawal (Honda Classic), a major letdown (missed cut at the British Open), and much scrutiny. He failed to win a PGA Tour event. Speculation about the couple’s separation began to creep up at the end of 2013, but McIlroy shot them down on social media.
On the day Rory McIlroy announced a "mutual" decision with Wozniacki not only to call off their wedding but also to call off their relationship, Ekstra Bladet reported Wednesday that Wozniacki has been suffering from a left knee injury that has prevented her from being able to run or serve for several weeks.
